About

A pre-midlife identity crisis is in large part fueling this blog. I turned 30 this year and I realized that my life so far has been full of apparent contradictions. I’ve been a soldier in Iraq, but then I’ve also been a full-time peace activist. I’ve been a journalist, but I’ve also been a public relations flak. I’m a devout Mormon, but I’m also a crazy liberal. It just doesn’t add up.

Of course, it all seemed perfectly natural to me at the time. It still does, actually. I’ve come to understand, however, that it doesn’t make a lot of sense to other people. So, this blog is my way of explaining myself.

Why would I take the time to explain myself to other people? Because I care what other people think. I know in our day and age of mavericks and go-it-alone rangers it’s an embarrassing admission to make, but it’s true. It’s just a debilitating weakness of mine that I’m going to have to work through.

Another reason for this blog is to add a few more shades of gray into popular debates. Television news analysis in particular seems to have fallen into a Republican-said-Democrat-said rut. Well if you want more variety and you’re wondering what the liberal-Mormon, pacifist-veteran, journalist-flak demographic is thinking, then you’ve come to the right place..
